Across the country every day, Kenyans are increasingly relying on simple technologies as tools for socio-economic transformation. These innovations have in turn stimulated acquisition of new skills, increased civic participation, and access to Insurance, education, healthcare, public safety among others.

Until recently, insurance has been slow to technological change. The insurance industry seemed to be operating in the same old way while new players worked to technologically disrupt banking and financial management, ticketing, travelling, bill payments etc. That era of stability has ended with increasing deployment of advanced sensor technologies and related services. The Insurers and reinsurers are seeking new and innovative systems to improve service delivery and efficiency within their companies.

A report by Institute on International Finance 2016 examining how technology is beginning to reshape the insurance landscape stated that Insurance is now like other major industries, grappling with the risks and opportunities of new technologies. The report further stated that one of the most exciting implications resulting from these developments is expanded insurability for low- income populations. In turn, this is accelerating competition, innovation and change in insurance.

In light of this, Resolution Insurance has adopted this new technology shift. Recently, we have implemented the SSP Pure Insurance System that is aimed at improving service delivery and simplifying product design processes. The system will drastically reduce exhausting and time consuming manual processes. Customers will benefit from an array of services such as web based application processes, digitized quotes among others.

Further, the integrated portal will support full cycle trading for Resolution Insurance brokers thereby enabling Insurance brokers benefit from single solutions claims management, e-trading across the broker community and overall policy administration.

 

In addition to simplified processes, we cannot ignore the mobile world which is a key innovation contributing to reshaping of the insurance industry today. The growing prevalence of mobile phones provides new methods for insurance firms to communicate with and provide products seamlessly at all hours to their customers, encouraging greater engagement and brand allegiance.

The Insurance market is an information based market since there is a lot of information gathering, processing and distribution and thus technology is needed to manage all this information.

    Thai police swooped on the home of one of the kingdom’s most high-profile officers on Monday as part of a series of
    raids targeting an illegal online gambling network dubbed “Betflix”.

    Most forms of betting are illegal in Thailand, with authorities striving recently to shut down the
    illicit gambling sites, often foreign-owned, that have sprung up.

    A sprawling investigation across six provinces saw SWAT teams raid some
    30 locations — including Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn’s central
    Bangkok house.

    Surachate, well known in Thailand for his regular appearances in the media giving updates
    on investigations, denied any involvement in the alleged gambling ring.

    “I’m not worried at all, because I’m not involved in this and I can answer any question,” he told reporters outside his home while the
    raid was under way.

    Police Major General Trairong Phiwpan said the raids stemmed from
    a probe into a gambling website called “Betflix” and 12 subsidiary sites.

    Later Monday he told local media that of 23 suspects, 17
    had been arrested, including eight police officers.

    Officers conducting the raid on Surachate’s house said they were unaware whose residence it was.

    Known by the nickname “Big Joke” — for his seniority, not
    his sense of humour — Surachate insisted the search warrant for his home
    was “irregular” and hinted at rivalries within the
    force.

    “Today I see this as nothing more than internal politics within the police,”
    he said.

    The raid comes only a few days before the selection of a
    new police chief, with Surachate touted as a
    possible candidate.

    The long-serving officer — nicknamed “the cat with nine lives” — has been linked to powerful figures in the previous government.

    He was appointed by ex-deputy prime minister
    Prawit Wongsuwan as chief of the Immigration Bureau in September
    2018.

    He disappeared in 2019 over unclear reasons, before then-prime minister Prayut
    Chan-o-cha made him a special adviser on strategy to police in 2021.

    Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office last month,
    told reporters he was monitoring the situation.

    “There may be the need to set up an independent investigation committee — because this is a big problem,” he said.

    “It affects the morale and public impression towards the police.”

    Thai police have long been dogged by allegations of endemic corruption.

    One in seven spends over ten hours each week with their eyes glued to their phones playing a game.

    It also emerged that casual gamers typically download two new gaming apps
    on their device each month.

    Sam Cross of Guru Arcade, makers of mobile game Pop Rocket Rescue, said: ‘You can play a mobile game anytime, anywhere, since smartphones are so portable.

    Forty-one percent of people have played a mobile game
    for up to three hours in one sitting.

    ‘Mobile games are designed to be played in small
    chunks of time, while waiting or taking a break. It’s bite-sized
    fun.’

    The average person is most likely to play a mobile game between 1pm and 2pm, although one in five plays ‘any time’ of the day and one in eight prefers to play between the hours of 9pm and midnight.

    Forty-one percent have played a mobile game for up to three hours in one sitting.

    Eighty-one percent can’t resist the fun these games provide and 42 percent play because it’s
    exercise for the brain – but their fun can sometimes
    mean ‘game over’ in a different sense.

    From getting fired from work, to arriving late or completely missing an event, 27 per
    cent confess that their mobile game playing has gotten them into
    trouble. 

    In the UK, an Ofcom study recently found 16 per
    cent of adults now exclusively use smartphones or tablets to
    go online, a 10 per cent increase on last year.

    AMERICA’S INTERNET ADDICTION 

    One-fifth of all Americans reported to being on the internet
    ‘almost constantly’, with young adults making up the largest percentage of this
    category.

    The majority of Americans – 73 per cent – indicated that they
    go online on a daily basis, and many go on several times per day.

    A Pew Research Center survey collected data from internet
    users between June and July 2015, and confirmed that Americans are constantly logging in.

    Young people are the most connected; the study found that 36 per cent of
    people ages 18 to 29 are online almost constantly, and 50 per cent go on several times per day.

    Teens and adults were found to share similar internet habits, with 24 percent of teenagers reporting
    almost constant use, and adults coming in at a similar figure.  

    The study also found half of adults (51 per cent) who
    use search engines do not realise the top items on many results pages are adverts or
    sponsored links. 

    The figures are from Ofcom’s Adults’ Media Use And Attitudes Report. 

    ‘This indicates these devices are not just supplementing PCs and
    laptops, but are starting to replace them,’ the regulator said.

    ‘There is a need for people to be more aware or savvy about
    the content they are accessing online’.

  26. Dec 20 (Reuters) – Rugby Football Union’s (RFU)
    board chairman Tom Ilube said on Friday he was stepping down, after it emerged that huge
    bonuses were paid to CEO Bill Sweeney and other executives
    despite the English governing body posting a record operating loss.

    The RFU Council has set up an immediate review into the circumstances
    surrounding the bonuses, after it was shown that Sweeney was paid a
    total of 1.1 million pounds ($1.4 million) in the last accounting
    year.

    The sum included a 358,000 pound bonus that was part of a long-term incentive plan (LTIP) for top executives.

    Under the plan, agreed after the executives took pay cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic, five others
    received a total of 1 million pounds.

    RFU reported a loss of 37.9 million pounds over the same period,
    and made more than 40 staff redundant in September.

    “I have decided to step down from my role as Chair of the RFU as recent events have become a distraction from the game, but will stay on to ensure a smooth transition to a new Chair as soon as one is in place,”
    Ilube said in a statement shared by the RFU.

    “I´m pleased that an independent review of the LTIP scheme has been commissioned and look forward to its findings once completed.”

    British media reported on Wednesday that Sweeney and Ilube
    were set to face a confidence vote after almost 200 member clubs and bodies demanded a
    special general meeting, to be held in February.
